‘Tis the week before Christmas! Is excitement running through your house?
One of the things I enjoy most about being a parent is reliving childhood experiences through the eyes of my children. When my children were toddlers, I enjoyed flipping through toy catalogs with them. We’d cut out pictures of the items they wanted and glued them onto a paper stocking, so Santa would know just what to deliver. Once they got into elementary, we made paper chains to countdown the days until Christmas. I also enjoyed helping with in their classrooms with holiday parties.
Now that my children are in Middle School, it seems that our holiday season is filled with more hustle and bustle as I plan my days around their activities. Shopping and holiday baking are squeezed in before work hours or in between doing chores, watching my son’s basketball games and chauffeuring my daughter to her horseback riding lessons. More than once, I’ve worried that I’m not doing enough to create wonderful family memories. Have you ever felt that way?
It’s times like this that I remind myself that we’re making memories when we’re not even trying! Some of the best memories are made simply by enjoying a moment in time. And even though none of us have a perfect life, there are some really incredible perfect moments.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to find peace in days filled with busyness, as well as some of my favorite holiday traditions:
Starting my day with a cup of tea, enjoying the Christmas tree lights before dawn breaks.
Wrapping presents as Christmas carols play in the background.
This morning my son commented that he believes it will be a “green Christmas.” (Although it’s strange to see green grass Iowa at Christmastime, it sure beats a brown one IMO.) My daughter said she’s been dreaming of a White Christmas – and that gave me an idea. I haven’t made snowflakes in years, so this weekend I think we’ll make our own White Christmas by cutting out snowflakes and hanging them in our windows.
How do you plan to make memories this weekend?
